Chicago

Chicago has twenty-six miles of continuous public lakefront and a food culture built on things you eat wrapped in paper while standing up. The combination is the best argument for eating outdoors in any American city.

5 places to sit · 10 places to buy food · checked 2026-09-14

Green markers are the picnic spots. Amber ones are where to buy the food. Every place below also links straight to Google Maps for walking directions.

Before you go

  • The lakefront is windy and about ten degrees cooler than the Loop. Bring a layer even in July.
  • Italian beef is served wet, with the roll dunked in gravy. It does not survive a long walk. Eat it close to where you bought it or order it dry.
  • Alcohol is not permitted in Chicago parks or on the beaches, and it is enforced.

Chicago Riverwalk

The Loop

A mile and a half of public path cut in below street level along the south bank of the river, so the traffic noise disappears and you're left looking straight up at the Wrigley Building and the Marina City corncobs.

Where to sit
Tiered steps down to the water, floating gardens, and benches the whole way.
Open
6am–11pm, roughly April to October. Quieter in winter.

Milton Lee Olive Park

Streeterville

A small peninsula of lawn and fountains behind the water filtration plant, next to Ohio Street Beach. The skyline view is the postcard one and, because there is no obvious reason to walk out here, it is usually half empty.
